Profile Summary

The Tax Director position is a key role in Voya’s Corporate Tax department, a dynamic and fast-paced group focused on driving tax efficiency and providing insightful advice to senior leadership across the company. Reporting to the VP Tax Reporting and Compliance, the Tax Director will lead the Company’s income tax accounting and reporting functions under ASC 740 and SSAP 101, ensuring tax accounts on the balance sheet are properly stated, and preparing all related financial disclosures in a strong internal control environment.  The successful candidate will work closely with members of the Tax Team on Sarbanes-Oxley processes, effective tax rate planning and forecasting, tax account reconciliations, provision and return software integration and workflows, tax planning, tax compliance and audit support.

Profile Responsibilities

  • Actively manage quarterly and year-end tax reporting process for income taxes pursuant to ASC 740 and SSAP 101.
  • Prepare/review tax-related reporting disclosures.
  • Manage quarterly reviews and year-end tax provision audits by the external/internal auditors.
  • Prepare/Review quarterly and forecasted income tax provisions and effective tax rate.
  • Monitor and develop internal controls over income tax reporting processes (Sarbanes Oxley compliance).
  • Coordinate with tax managers in planning, federal, and state compliance on various tax accounting and return positions.
  • Prepare/review quarterly and year-end account reconciliations, account proofs and account rollforwards.
  • Make meaningful contributions to development and training of Corporate Tax Department staff.
  • Maintain tax basis balance sheet and deferred tax inventory.
  • Lead tax accounting process improvements and documentation enhancements.
  • Assist with analyzing proposed transactions and tax planning activities.
  • Manage documentation of processes, procedures and technical issues.
  • Lead and participate in special projects and/or initiatives, as needed.
  • Serve as a liaison to Finance, Accounting, Treasury, Legal, lines of business and other internal customers to ensure appropriate management of tax reporting and risk.
  • Other duties and projects as assigned.

Knowledge & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required.  CPA and/or master’s degree in Accounting or Taxation preferred.
  • A combination of 10+ years of tax experience in a large corporate environment and/or Big 4 accounting firm (preferably with significant experience in the insurance or financial services sector).
  • Technical expertise in ASC 740 and SSAP 101.  Comprehensive knowledge of US federal and state income tax law.
  • Experience with SEC external reporting requirements and administration of Sarbanes Oxley compliance process.
  • Demonstrated problem solving, leadership and management experience.
  • Experience with OneSource tax provision software is a plus. Proficiency in software applications, primarily Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Proven ability to independently operate in a cross-functional, fast-paced environment. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to manage processes and meetings effectively and efficiently. 
  • Ability to explain complex concepts in a concise way to senior leadership. 
  • Ability to organize information/workflows and support the Tax Team in developing and implementing technology tools and automation in a high-control environment
