Profile Summary:

The Data Steward - Director reports to the VP of Enterprise Data Governance, and is responsible for supporting data governance initiatives, and responsible for managing the governance of data content, context and associated business rules.  The director leads and oversees an organization's data assets in order to help provide data consumers with high-quality data that is easily accessible in consistent manner.  He/She will work closely and lead discussions with senior management within business, technology and operations to raise awareness of data governance policies and procedures and initiate the implementation of the data governance framework and models.  The director will work with business, technology and operations SMEs within and across business unit(s) to improve reusability, accessibility and quality of data – while also providing industry leading practices. The director will be well versed with the latest trends and technological capabilities in area of metadata management to apply and support the enterprise governance around data.

The ideal candidate will possess a combination of skills, from technical acumen to well-developed leadership and communication skills to manage relationships with senior level management, SMEs and other data stewards across the organization, communicate and implement data governance initiatives, pilots and proof of concepts, and provide insight into developing scorecards and KPIs based on input from all levels of management.

This role will provide thought leadership for data stewardship around finance data types, and will work closely with senior management, SMEs and stewards in the business, operations and technology to implement and uphold the data governance framework.  The Data Steward – Director will be a key driver and integral to coordinating with business and technology to implement data governance around the finance data at the enterprise level.

Profile Description:

  • Develop and maintain relationships with senior management across business, technology and operations to raise awareness of data governance framework and policies around finance data to align data with enterprise data governance framework
  • Support the enterprise data governance pilots and Proof of Concepts around finance data by coordinating and collaborating with senior management across business, technology and operations to identify resources and agree on plan activities to successfully complete the initiatives
  • Champions Enterprise Data Governance Strategy and advocates and supports implementation / adoption of Data Governance Office prescribed data principles, policies and standards
  • Provides SME input to identify data producers and consumers to assemble business data information about the domain and consolidate it into a data model that accurately reflects steward’s domain of influence / control
  • Ongoing support with definition and maintenance of metadata, business terms, data ownership, CDE’s, producer/consumer listing, information flow diagrams, within the data domain
  • Leads, Defines and monitors business data profiles and data quality rules and issues to perform root cause analysis and data remediation activities related to data quality. Identifies anomalies and documents data issues. 
  • Manage issue management and resolution processes (Prioritization, tracking, accountability etc.) with senior management to prioritize and remediate data quality issues in a timely manner; Communicate and escalate issues to Data Councils and Data Committee as needed
  • Communicates new and changed business requirements, rules, and definitions to impacted areas and escalates concerns to senior management to minimize impact to data management process
  • Identify the origin and sources of authority on each metadata element, and define data flows within the Business Unit to align with Authoritative Source framework and collaborates with business, technology and operations to remediate any issues.
  • Leads the discussions with business, technology and operations to document business processes and data flows to support critical data elements, data quality and issue resolution management processes.
  • Comply with all security policies and procedures, to ensure that the highest level of system and data confidentiality, integrity and availability is maintained across data type.
  • Work in collaboration with senior management across business, technology and operations to implement policies and procedures which will enforce repeatable and reliable processes, thus reducing variability, increasing efficiency and enhancing overall data quality and compliance.

Knowledge & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Business, Finance, MIS or Computer science
  • 7-10+ years in financial services industry. Specific knowledge around data governance and data management principles
  • Experience in business and data analysis, process improvement and project management
  • Experience in developing data standards, processes, and policies
  • Experience in developing and implementing enterprise data strategies, operational data stores and data quality tools
  • Experience in managing large scale data remediation projects
  • Proven track record relative to role in building and maintaining relationships with senior management across business and technology
  • Experience in educating and influencing program stakeholders regarding program goals, objectives, approach and implementation
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to present ideas and suggestions clearly and effectively.
  • Demonstrated history of working with various groups and different level of employees throughout the organization to effectively achieve results.
  • Self-motivated; able to work independently to complete tasks and respond to requests, collaborate with others to identify high quality solutions.
  • Specific knowledge of a relevant data domain -business area / system / function (e.g. Retirement, Investment Management, Life Insurance, Annuity, Employee Benefits, Finance, GL, Capital Markets, Operations, Risk, Regulatory reporting, Audit, etc.)
  • Specific knowledge of finance/accounting relevant data domain, systems/architecture (e.g. General Ledger, Chart of Accounts, etc.)
  • Preferred - Ability to interpret, analyze large data sets leveraging different tools; Prior exposure to tools and technology such as Collibra, Pandora, IDQ, Archer; Basic knowledge of SQL / Access / Qlikview/ Tableau
